From the Sanskrit word meaning whole world, or healing or magic circle, the mandala has been used as a sacred and devotional object in many religions throughout history . The Tibetan Monks have used the mandala for 25,000 years, one of the ways being their beautiful and sacred sand paintings. The Native Americans also have through the ages used sand painting as a spiritual ritual. The Navajos are most well known for their wondrous sand paintings. The famous psychologist Carl Jung had much to do with introducing the mandala to the west, and had much to say about their deeper meaning. An excerpt from his "Memories, Dreams, Reflections": "I had to abandon the idea of the superordinate position of the ego. ... I saw that everything, all paths I had been following, all steps I had taken, were leading back to a single point -- namely, to the mid-point. It became increasingly plain to me that the mandala is the centre. It is the exponent of all paths. It is the path to the centre, to individuation. ... I knew that in finding the mandala as an expression of the self I had attained what was for me the ultimate. " He also had to say about the mandala: "A mandala may be drawn, painted or danced. They can also be visualized through active imagination. " and: "Drawing mandalas expands one's thinking, exercises integrity, exposes unconscious traits, focuses attention and brings self-knowledge. It calms and relaxes the psyche." From another point of view, in his book "The Western Mandala," Adam McClean writes "(Mandalas)...can be seen to be keys that unlock the mysteries of our soul's architecture. If we choose to use them in this way, they can lead us deep into the mysteries of our inner world."
All in all, coloring mandalas is a soothing way in which we can tap into the divine , while bringing healing and peace through their circular magic. That's what Color Me Mandalas is all about.... healing, peace, magic, and, most of all......... enjoyment. Enjoy. Diane Powers Color Me Mandalas
